Unreleased Acetate: All Night Long (with John Christian Ex Shady Lady)

All Night Long/ Down On 42nd Street -EMIDISC Acetate (circa 1974)
Here are full versions of two wild slabs of Proto Punk Glam just oozing ATTITUDE. All Night Long was initially recorded by LA Glamsters Shady Lady and the original recording of All Night Long can be heard here: myspace.com/shadyladyrocks along with other tracks from their album that was unreleased at the time.
The track was written by singer Stefen Shady with guitarist John Christian. John left the band in 1973 and went to London where these two tracks were recorded in 73/74. The sassy vocals are handled by John’s wife Valerie. Both tracks are equally as good and are great examples of NY Dolls sleaze (with a bit of Quatro thrown in) and would have fitted in well with the burgeoning NY Punk scene, but definitely 3 years too early for the UK…I don’t know the name of the band, if anyone knows, please let me know.

Great great tunes the first is like Chinn/Chapman with Johnny Thunders and Jayne County (love that tempo change too), and the other is like Rocky Horror in one of those leopard's head 'Wild Thing' T Shirts

I'm glad you asked me that fair Euro. Why, the very best from our favourite home town son. Check it out...

Shady Lady - aaaah the memories. When I was a young Angeleno, they were the talk of the town's hipster cognescenti, but by the time I came of age (well, old enough to go to the local clubs), circa 1973, they didn't seem to be around any more - having been replaced in the city's collective hearts and minds by young upstarts like Christopher Milk.

The REAL lost LA glam story was a band called The Hollywood Stars. A Kim Fowley creation (pre Runaways/Quick etc.) they were initially envisioned as LA's answer to The Dolls, but they were much more powerpoppy & tuneful, while still packing quite a punch. Related to, but significantly different from, the band of the same name that released an album circa 1976. The original band apparently recorded an album for CBS circa 1974, but it's never been released. Find and post that one and I will be forever in your debt!

Ah yes. The Story of The Hollywood Stars was a great article in Bomp. I think Kim Fowley himself wrote that one. From what I can remember those unreleased sessions were produced by a corporate underling and the album, shelved, but even if they were only demos, it would be great to get them released. I guess Kim Fowley is the guy to approach. Some of the songs appeared later (not quite on a Smile/ Smiley Smle level) but the version of No Escape came out on Alice Cooper's Welcome To My Nightmare LP is still great. I will soon be doing a Lance Romance/ Jimmy Jukebox post, so I will try and track Mr Fowley down for that one...

Already past ya, Robin. Asked Fowley about the Stars demos and the drummer, Terry Rae, has 'em, he claims. Terry's still around and played with everyone from Jamme and the Flamin' Groovies to Blue Cheer and Sparks. SEEK HIM OUT!

dear anonymous
so, with which ID was I crossing swords with?

My ID is Oi!-kid. So much for me trying to snipe it, you were willing to pay much more than I. I'm very pleased to see it turn up on your blog though. I thought I'd never see that record again!

I remember John. I vaguely remember him coming to Trident once and I think I saw him hanging at the Speakeasy, too. Valerie went by the name Valerie Hunter. She was brash, funny and ferociously sexy. Around that time, she did a spread for a men's mag (like Hustler, or Men Only). So I'm told. The Wild Thing t-shirt comment is right on
